Henry Schein, Inc., the National Dental Association, and the Schattner Foundation continue their collaboration on the S.M.I.L.E. Healthcare Pathway Program after completing the 2024 program, which included additional partners the Hispanic Dental Association; the Society of American Indian Dentists; Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry; A.T. Still University’s Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health; and, A.T. Still University’s Missouri School of Dentistry & Oral Health. The 3-year pilot program is designed to mentor future healthcare professionals and enhance health literacy, aiming to expand diversity in the healthcare workforce. In America, as over 30% of the American population identify as Black or African American or Hispanic, with that number dropping to 10%¹ for dentists. By having more people from these backgrounds in the healthcare industry, it will ultimately improve health and overall outcomes in underserved communities nationwide. The Program engages rising 9th and 10th-grade students by through a week-long immersive experience where participants gain exposure to the diverse roles within dental teams, including assisting, hygiene, and dentistry, along with insights into various practice models and industry positions.
