Endodontics is a specialized field of dentistry dedicated to diagnosing, preventing and treating issues affecting the dental pulp: the innermost layer of a tooth containing nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue. When this area becomes inflamed or infected due to decay or trauma, it often leads to significant pain and discomfort. That’s why having the right endo supplies is crucial — not only to perform treatments that protect and preserve the natural teeth but also to provide your patients with the relief they need from ongoing pain and infection.

Root canal therapy is one of the most common procedures in dental endodontics, requiring specialized tools and instruments to achieve optimal results. Below, we’ve outlined a snapshot of the key steps and products needed for successful treatment:
Consult with your patient to confirm the need for a root canal. First, capture detailed views of the tooth and surrounding structures using 2D and 3D imaging equipment like intraoral X-rays and CBCT units. Then, perform diagnostic tests to evaluate factors such as tooth sensitivity (via cold tests and tapping), loss of bone (via probing) and response to electrical currents (via electric pulp test, or EPT).
Prepare the tooth by creating an access cavity to reach the dental pulp. Common root canal instruments used for this step include dental anesthetics to properly numb the area, high-speed handpieces and dental burs for precise cutting, rubber dams and clamps for isolation and moisture control and dental explorers for visibility and assessment.
Use endodontic files and reamers to remove the infected or inflamed pulp, clean the root canal and shape it to effectively eliminate debris and bacteria. Endo files are available in various designs and sizes, with nickel-titanium (NiTi) being among the most frequently used. It’s important to irrigate the canal thoroughly each time a file is changed, using solutions like sodium hypochlorite or EDTA to flush out debris and maintain consistent infection control throughout the procedure. Paper points should then be used to absorb excess moisture and help keep the canal dry before filling and sealing.
Ensure the canal is fully accessed, shaped and disinfected to eliminate all traces of infection. Once this is achieved, the next step is obturation — sealing the canal to prevent bacteria from reentering and causing reinfection. This process involves using gutta percha points to fill the canal, endodontic sealers and cements to ensure a tight seal and obturation devices such as warm vertical condensation systems or cold lateral compaction tools to complete the procedure.
Restore the tooth to its full function and natural appearance by fabricating and placing a dental crown or similar restoration. This final step is vital for protecting the tooth from further damage and ensuring long-term durability and aesthetics. If a permanent restoration cannot be placed immediately, temporary filling materials can offer an effective short-term solution.
From endo files to dental burs, gutta percha points and more, rely on EdgeEndo to take your practice’s dental endodontics to the next level.
